2024 FILM MAUDIT 2.0 REVIEW!

ASPHALT is a short film that begins with static on a screen, making me really look forward to what I was about to see. As time passed, it became apparent that what I was seeing wasn't static, it was moving ASPHALT, the way it looks if you watch the road from the passenger seat of a car.

Then, sound effects become noticeable, sounds like whispers you can't decipher, some ambient, new wave sounding background “music” as well.

Okay, at this point, I'm still waiting for the movie to start. I soon realize this IS the movie. ASPHALT, Ass Fault? Are you trying to make an ass of everyone watching this? Is this the end result of a bet? Is this a private joke the rest of us aren't in on? What is this supposed to be?

I suppose I should be thankful this thing wasn't any longer, because I feel like I wasted seven minutes of my life. Actually, I watched it several times, to make sure I wasn't missing something, anything. No. It may as well have been three hours. I was annoyed by whispering pavement.

Now, if I keep a completely objective lens and view it as pure art, it could mean several things. Perhaps ASPHALT is art in its truest sense; a physical manifestation of all the life in that city, the whispering sounds and music all the echoes of everyone and everything that has traveled that ASPHALT. Perhaps it's a commentary on our modern world, largely cut off from nature and each other, pavement and filth overtaking nature.

Is that it? Am I reading too much into it? Is it the insult I originally perceived it to be? I have no answers on this one. Only the road knows.

Directed by Shiri Furst.

4/10 = WORTH WATCHING, BUT YOU’VE BEEN WARNED
