Beetlejuice (1988)

Updated: Oct 11, 2020

It would have been easy to tell, even having not known beforehand, that this was a Tim Burton film. Burton’s odd use of over exaggerating everything was present in almost every scene of this film. Just about everything in this film bothered me. I thought the animation (even though it was meant to be a bit corny) was just utterly strange, I thought the storyline--while potentially interesting--was ruined by the oddity that was Beetlejuice/Betelguese and I was even more turned off by the fact that the title character, Michael Keaton’s Betelguise/Beetlejuice wasn’t in the first half of the film. However, what frustrated me the most about this film was the name. Throughout the course of the film the title character is referenced using the name “Betelguese,” however, the film is titled “Beetlejuice.” I attempted to find a reasonable explanation for this, yet, there are none. The explanation given on IMDB.com is that the only reason the title of the film differs from the actual spelling of the character’s name is “...because it’s funnier and markets better.”  The most interesting thing about this film was the fact that it was given a rating of PG and yet it contains a number of sexual references and the use of the “f” word. I did think, however, due to the fact that the acting was most likely intended to be goofy, that each of the characters did a very good job of executing their respective roles, and that Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin put on the best performances of all the characters. I’m not sure that I’ve ever heard a negative review of this film. So, with that being said, I feel that this may be one of the most overrated films of all time. While I wasn’t terribly interested in watching this film to begin with, I still managed to finish this film with a sense of disappointment. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094721/?ref_=nv_sr_1
