2025 SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW!
Blocked Together is a short, experimental film, written and directed by Noah Boyce. Included in “6XTY,” a new category this year at Slamdance, Blocked Together runs for only one minute. However, I was also able to view an extended version, for the purpose of this review.
Blocked Together is skillfully done. No small feat for a film made with no budget, and collectively done so by an entire crew that happens to be under the age of 19, with Boyce directing at only 18 years old. Filmed in the rural English countryside, Blocked Together succinctly tells a story of loss, grief and the feeling of isolation that accompanies it, using specific visuals, combined with a highly experimental editing technique they created for this film.
Blocked Together takes place at a church graveyard in Boyce's home village of Norfolk. Both beautiful and tragic looking, it's the perfect backdrop for what is an emotionally charged film, despite its brevity. We see a young man, who appears to be a teen, at his younger brother's graveside. As the scene augments, we see a friend of the younger brother is also there. Both having been alone in their grief, the two boys join together to mourn their loss, and realize they aren't as alone in their grief as they each believed.
I look forward to seeing more of Boyce's films as he builds his body of work.
