Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

As I’ve said on numerous occasions, Tom Hanks is a phenomenal actor. While this film is no exception to this, I felt that this role was so simple that it was impossible for Hanks to do his own acting justice. I found the film hard to follow at times. The story wasn’t terribly complex, however, the characters spoke so technically about things that the general public would not always understand or be aware of. The most disappointing thing about the film was a scene, at around thirty minutes into the film, that depicted a helicopter in the Middle East mowing down masses of people. While the scene was meant to be intense the fact that the entire scene appeared to be CGI (it looked completely like a video game—with the exception of some actual footage) it was hard to feel what was attempting to be portrayed. Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s Gust Avrakatos was, hands down the best character in the film and his chemistry with Tom Hanks’ Charlie Wilson was the best part of the film. Overall, the film moved slowly and it, at some points, became difficult to enjoy. However, when these two characters were on screen together, the film became immensely better. I can’t say that the film was terrible, however, it certainly wasn’t my favorite.
