Cruel Intentions (1999)

I was told prior to watching this film that I would hate it, that it, in some ways, resembled a chick flick and, for those of you who know me, know that I typically don’t care for chick flicks. While I cannot say that I hated the film, I definitely had some issues with the actors and the characters. My issue with the acting was that everything appeared to be over-rehearsed. Everything that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Kathryn Merteuil and Ryan Phillippe’s Sebastian Valmont said appeared to me extremely matter-of-fact and emotion seemed to play almost no part in their performance. The acting, in my opinion, was terribly subpar. I had a huge issue with the character of Sebastian Valmont as well. The character was meant to be promiscuous and fantastic with women, however, I felt that the character did not come off this way. The character’s persona appeared to clash with the idea that he was licentious. There were aspects of the story that were interesting, but, as a whole, the storyline was uncomfortable and screwed up. One completely positive aspect of this film was the pacing. Before I knew it, the film was three-quarters of the way over and I felt that I had only been watching for twenty minutes. There was enough going on in the film that, even though it was weird, it kept me engaged. Even with all of the critiques I made of this film, I’m struggling to determine whether I felt that this was a good film or a bad film. It’s almost as if this film just exists, it sits dead center on any scale, neither good nor bad. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0139134/?ref_=nv_sr_1
