Dead Man on Campus (2003)

I absolutely loved the opening sequence of this film. I believe that it perfectly captured the fact that college is crazy, chaotic, a bit scary, but fun. The rest of the film built on this sequence. It covered the struggles in which college students regularly deal with, it certainly mentioned the fact that, with everything that goes on each day while at school, life is crazy, it (with some hesitation) showed the audience just how much fun you can have in college and that with everything that is thrown at you on a day to day basis, it can also be quite scary. These four overlying themes helped to mold the story and create something unlike any other college film I had seen in the past. The acting in this film, I believe, was a little subpar. I thought that Tom Everett Scott and Mark-Paul Gosselaar are decent actors that were a bit overly emotional in this film. While the acting wasn’t great, I think that the tone of the film allowed for this minor issue. Due to the fact that this film was supposed to be goofy and a bit light-hearted, despite the potentially horrific outcome, I think that the subpar acting was something that would have been easily overlooked by the audience. Considering the fact that this film is a comedy, the storyline is quite morbid. The idea of having someone, a stranger, kill themselves for personal gain is a terrible thing to aim for. What’s weird is the fact that Alan Cohn and the writers managed to find a way to make the entire process of looking for a suicidal student on campus enjoyable and funny. It’s difficult to say that this process was funny, but the writers, director and actors somehow found a way to make that so. I truly believe that in the year 2018 a film like this could not be made. With the issues taking place in the world and the ever-changing idea of humor, audiences would certainly react differently than they did twenty years ago. While the storyline was incredibly messed up, I am amazed at the creativity put into developing this film. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0118301/?ref_=nv_sr_1
