Death Race (2008)

While I know this was a remake, I still believe that Paul W.S. Anderson did a phenomenal job with the script. I can’t comment on how close it is to the original, however, based on some of the ratings it received, I have to assume that it did the original some justice. Considering the fact that the film had an incredibly low budget (more than twenty million below the average in 2008), I thought the special effects and the casting were top notch. To successfully cast Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson (who I believe is an underrated actor) and Joan Allen—considering the low budget—is quite the accomplishment. I thought that the three actors worked very well together and successfully portrayed their respective characters. Allen most certainly stepped out of her comfort zone when accepting the role of Hennessy, the warden of an outlandishly aggressive prison. I thought that the computer generated images were done successfully. In a film like this, the use of CGI plays an integral role. There were very few times that I noticed images that looked fake (even in Hollywood’s greatest films there are instances of botched uses of CGI). I think one of my favorite things about the film was that the sequences of racing lasted a long time; the better part of almost two hours was filled with action. What made this so successful was the fact that even with the actual race taking up about a third of the film, the story did not suffer. Anderson did a wonderful job of building and effectively providing the audience with a story that pulled them in. From the story, to the characters, to the incredible amount of heart-thumping action, I was impressed with this film. If everything I’ve mentioned, plus blood, gore and large amounts of foul language are what constitutes a good time for you, I seriously suggest that you watch this film. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0452608/
