Dinner for Schmucks (2010)

This film is terribly stupid and much of what takes place throughout the course of the story is inconceivable. From the moment the film begins, director, Jay Roach, and the writers make sure to let the audience know that they are in for a very strange ride. Steve Carell’s Barry, Jemaine Clement’s Kiernan and Zach Galifianakis’ Therman were some of the weirdest characters ever to grace the big screen. Throughout the course of the film, these characters regularly present the viewers with incredible eccentricity. While they are incredibly odd, more so than I think I had ever seen before, they were uniquely funny. I enjoyed the humor throughout the film, however, the annoyances in the film far overshadowed any other aspect. The predicaments that Barry regularly gets Paul Rudd’s Tim Conrad into became frustrating; and, the deeper the hole that he dug the duo, the more I dreaded what was going to happen next. The film truly was interesting and funny, but the amount of miscommunication and misunderstanding led to me becoming unhappy with a number of characters (particularly Lucy Punch’s Darla) forcing me to dwell on the negatives and forget about the number of positives that took place throughout the course of the story. Furthermore, the last portion of the film--the dinner--was uncomfortable and frustrating due to the fact that a bunch of adults who are meant to be intellectuals and professionals sat around for hours, making fun of unsuspecting victims for things that they are passionate about. While there were glimpses of comic genius, from Carell and Rudd, throughout these difficult times in the film, the lowest lows far surpassed even Carell or Rudd’s greatest moments in the film. I think that in order to appreciate the film from beginning to end I’d have to be in the right state of mind and would essentially have to prepare myself for the portions of the film that I truly dread. If you’re prepared for a series of peaks and valleys, give the film a shot, but be prepared for a potential let down. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427152/?ref_=nv_sr_1
