DOA: Dead or Alive (2006)

This film was an oversexualized combination of McG’s Charlie’s Angels (2000) and Paul Anderson’s Mortal Kombat (1995). We see a group of talented fighters brought to an island to fight one another to prove that they are the best fighter in the world. In addition to this, there are a group of women who make it their goal to seek out justice for Kasumi’s (Devon Aoki) late brother and uncover the secrets of Donovan (Eric Roberts) the organizer of the tournament. The story was compelling and full of unique twists and turns throughout, giving it the potential to be an enjoyable film. This, however, was not the case. The acting was so incredibly horrific, the dialogue lacked any sort of originality (or any thought for that matter) and the action sequences were some of the most unrealistic I’ve ever seen in a film. The only thing that allowed the film to entice audiences to any degree was the fact that it was so cheesy. The combination of each of the film’s shortcomings allowed the film to become funny and, in some ways, enjoyable. For those that are a fan of the video game that was the inspiration for this film, it may cause feelings of nostalgia, but, I promise you, this is not a film you need to watch.  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0398913/?ref_=nv_sr_1
