Doctor Strange (2016)

Stephanie made it very clear that this is her least favorite film in the MCU. Her favorite part of the film was the cape. My opinion is as follows: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Stephen Strange is the most arrogant, dick of a character to be a part of the MCU. He’s possibly the most unlikable character to ever be in a film. That being said, as the film progresses and his character begins to change he becomes one of the more likable and relatable characters in the MCU. He has become a person who has to work towards a goal rather than it coming so easily to him. More so, he becomes a man who lost everything and has to start from scratch, a man that has to deeply struggle (both mentally and physically) before he can succeed. This makes him more likable, he becomes more human and more personable as the film progresses. The point is which Strange first meets Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One is one of the trippiest scenes ever; I think it actually gave me a headache in the theater. The most interesting thing about the film is the fact that Cumberbatch plays two characters; both Stephen Strange and the villain, Dormammu. I did like this film, but I felt that it lacked something. I did struggle to become as attached to this film as I have been to others in the past. I think part of the issue is that it lacked characters, other than Strange, that really grabbed my attention. The next best character was either Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo or Benedict Wong’s Wong. However, these two characters fall short of the standard Marvel has set compared with other secondary characters like Cheadle’s Rhodey or Hiddleston’s Loki. I look forward to the second Doctor Strange film  and it potentially redeeming the first. I think Cumberbatch’s small role in Thor: Ragnorak showed audiences Strange’s potential as an amazing character and I hope to see more of that in future Marvel films. http://m.imdb.com/title/tt1211837/
