Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991)

The title of this film pretty much says it all, or so one would think. The title plays a role in the film for all of ten minutes. I learned early on that this film was less about the babysitter kicking the bucket and more about a teenage girl coming of age and beginning to understand the harsh realities of the world. As Christina Applegate’s Swell made her way into corporate America, it became apparent what was eventually going to happen regarding her unique situation. There was a slow build up to this event and it became, at points, difficult to deal with the characters beating around the bush of inevitability. However, the culmination of everything at the end of the film was complete and utter chaos and while it was somewhat awkward, it was one of the most interesting parts of the film. There was a slew of dry humor and simplistic acting making the overall film quite plain yet enjoyable. Everyone’s acting was more than acceptable (with the exception of John Getz) and I thought that it was the acting that allowed the film to work so well. From beginning to end, I was impressed with the acting of each of the young actors in the film. Considering many of the actors were so young, I was that much more impressed with the product put out by the cast and director Stephen Herek. I had no expectations going into this and I believe that this is why I appreciated the simplicity of Neil Landau and Tara Ison’s script so much. This is a film that children should be forced to watch when they are young so they can appreciate the hardships adults go through on a regular basis. By the end of the film, Herek basically sums up every issue that an adult deals with from day to day and somehow manages to calm his audience by relaying the message that someone always has your back. The film reminds its viewers that even when life gets difficult, good things are always on the horizon, unless you’re the babysitter. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101757/?ref_=nv_sr_1
