Draft Day (2014)

The NFL draft is an event that holds the potential to greatly affect the lives of hundreds of young men and their families. Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day captures the intensity of its first day and of each moment within it. This All-Pro cast creates drama that truly rivals the actual draft and the NFL season. Sonny Weaver Jr. (Kevin Costner), Vontae Mack (Chadwick Boseman) and Bo Callahan (Josh Pence) create a tone that forces the audience to the edge of their seats and refuses to let them relax the way an NFL game does. The three, along with the rest of the cast, prove how stressful professional sports can be and how the drama that occurs on a regular basis in this field of work (and form of entertainment) can be so enticing. The side story revolving around Weaver Jr. and his late father (and the rest of his personal life) could have potentially taken so much away from the main storyline, yet, Reitman found a way to intertwine the two stories without having one step on the other. The two stories managed to support one another and make the film cohesive. The connection between Costner, Boseman, Pence and Arian Foster (Ray Jennings) was impeccable. The four characters developed and maintained relationships that helped propel the film forward and provide a better understanding of the dilemmas that Weaver Jr. faced on draft day. For those who are unfamiliar with the draft process or football, in general, the film could have potentially left them in the dark and in need of answers, however, the film, as a whole, did a great job of explaining everything that was taking place as to make sure this was not an issue for any viewers. The film was certainly geared more towards fans of sports, but it appeared that the crew wanted to reach out to the general public as well. I believe that from the very first moment, the cast and crew did a wonderful job of drawing in the audience and making sure never to let go. Even when things seemed to have come to an end, the tone and actors still provided the sense that there was more to come. The final moments of the film were some of the best as justice was served to those who deserved it and those characters who the audience had grown to like were rewarded. The film was rewarding in many ways and it felt like a top-notch drama rather than just a film about sports. It transcends a number of different audiences and it successfully touches each of its viewers. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2223990/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
