Drive Me Crazy (1999)

The sad reality of “chick flicks” is the fact that they are entirely too predictable and leave very little to the imagination. John Schultz’s Drive Me Crazy follows in the footsteps of nearly every film in its genre that came before it. The film follows two former friends that have, over time, drifted apart. As the film progresses the two begin to realize what they had been missing since the start of the drift. As one thing leads to another, what appeared to be the endgame for the two main characters (Nicole Maris (Melissa Joan Hart) and Chase Hammond (Adrian Grenier)) becomes more and more apparent. While the film follows the script of every other chick flick so closely, there were moments of near genius that allowed the film to flourish. One moment, in particular, that stands out was the scene in which Chase and Nicole are sitting in the car listening to one of the greatest loves songs of all time, REO Speedwagon’s “Keep On Loving You.” The song alone made this particular scene enjoyable. The music, in general, was what made the film pop. Classics like “Keep On Loving You” and popular 90’s hits such as “I Want It That Way” and “(You Drive Me) Crazy” added a dimension of fun that some films in this genre lack. The film’s crew managed to connect audiences to this film with their music choices, something that many film crew members can and should learn from. As previously stated, this film follows in the footsteps of almost every chick flick that has come before it, making the film less enjoyable than it potentially could have been. A bit of originality could have gone a long way for Schultz and writer, Rob Thomas. The film was not great but was mildly successful as I believe adhering to the mold that many audiences still find enjoyable allowed for a profit and a decent following. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0164114/?ref_=nv_sr_1
