Eighth Grade (2018)

Through a series of stand-up comedy specials, Bo Burnham has told stories of sex, gore and how the world needs to change. He covers a wide variety of topics and always manages to hit the nail on the head in terms of relaying his message to his audience. This film, while slightly different from the other topics that Burnham has covered, is so well executed like the rest of his material. The films theme is, to the highest degree, awkwardness and Kayla Day (Elsie Fisher) is the embodiment of that theme. Fisher, for a relatively unknown actress, did a phenomenal job of portraying an awkward teenage girl ready to dive into new things, including making friends, talking to boys and entering high school. Kayla, throughout the entire film, from the moment she makes her first appearance on screen, until the final scene, comes off as awkward and emotionally unable to cope with the hardships that befall her during her final week of eighth grade. The film was emotional and relatable due to Burnham’s impeccable writing ability. Audiences, regardless of social status, were able to understand the issues that Day regularly dealt with, even if they had not personally dealt with similar situations; this was due to Fisher’s acting ability. While most films exaggerate real life situations in one way or another, this film, through a combination of Burnham’s dialogue and Fisher’s acting ability, managed to remain very level and keep the situations in question incredibly realistic. Relying heavily on realism allowed the film to have a stronger impact on the audience and allowed them to understand, to a greater degree, the injustices that take place in the real world via this teenage girl. I truly believe that Bo Burnham’s first attempt at writing and directing a film was a complete and utter success. While I find his stand-up specials to be very enjoyable, I thought that this film far surpassed anything he has done in the past. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7014006/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1
