Ernest Goes to Africa (1997)

Anyone that has made it this deep into the Ernest P. Worrell collection of films knows that those films are full of ridiculous jokes and mediocre slapstick comedy; this installment of John R. Cherry III’s Ernest series is no different in that regard. This film, however, came up short in almost every way. The comedy lacked the appropriate delivery and because of this most of the jokes fell flat. None of the Cherry’s Ernest films had a substantial budget and it showed, but it appeared that Cherry was so worried about filming on location, in Africa, that he used much of the budget to accomplish this feat rather than in the most appropriate areas (such as visuals). Nearly everything about this film appeared fake, even more so than in Varney’s previous films. On top of everything else, the film was incredibly racist. While accidental racism (sometimes even intentional racism) is used for comedic purposes in films this film took it too far. Africans were depicted as stupid, primative and thuggish throughout the course of the entire film and, as mentioned before, the delivery of nearly every joke was horrific, leading to the jokes being nothing but racist. The entire film felt like a chore to watch and it was incredibly disappointing considering how much fun I find the other films. Cherry should have stuck to his usual Ernest P. Worrell formula for comedy and success. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119068/?ref_=nv_sr_3?ref_=nv_sr_3
