Evil Dead (1981)

Having previously seen the 2013 remake of the same name, I had low expectations for this film. From the opening scene of the film it was very clear that Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead original would be terribly corny and would lack the necessary elements to effectively scare an audience. Raimi certainly has a style; he likes to write and direct films with over-the-top makeup and special effects. Rather than use modest amounts of makeup and special effects as to avoid making the film seem too unrealistic (even considering the story) he always seems to choose the opposite. His choice to overdue it in these areas took away any and all aspects of horror in the film and it made it difficult to take the film seriously. Many of the scenes were almost comical. They would have been laugh-out-loud funny had it not been for the obnoxious noises that the demented Linda (Betsy Baker) and Shelly (Theresa Tilly) made throughout the film. There were times when I was on the verge of laughter and was immediately turned off by the nearly nauseating screams of Shelly and laughs of Linda. The story, itself, was truly an original piece of work for the time period in which it was created and it had the potential to be an interesting film, if it had been done properly. The acting (with the exception of Richard DiManancor [Scott]) was subpar; Bruce Campbell (Ashley ‘Ash’ J. Williams) was terribly disappointing and brought very little to the table other than being the lone survivor. Considering he is both in the 1987 sequel and the 2015 comedy series Ash vs Evil Dead I was prepared for, at the very least, an adequate performance by Campbell and this was just not the case. I will most likely avoid the sequel and any and all related entities as I believe that I will get similar results. One may suppose that there is a small target audience for a film like this; audiences who might enjoy practically endless blood and gore and a series of near laughs may find this film entertaining. However, this film has not aged well and it can surely be said that new audiences may struggle to find any form of pleasure from this film.  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083907/?ref_=nv_sr_2?ref_=nv_sr_2
