Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

Comedy, action and family! These are all aspects that people have come to expect from the Fast and Furious franchise and, yet, not much about this film feels like it should be related to the first eight films. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Luke Hobbs) and Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw) return to the franchise for their fifth and third times respectively. Their chemistry is strong and has been apparent since they first appeared on screen together in 2015. Oftentimes audiences must suspend their disbelief while watching Hollywood films due to the fact that aspects are exaggerated for effect. This film is a perfect example of the need to suspend your disbelief in order to appreciate the end product. Idris Elba (Brixton) is introduced as the first literal superhero in the franchise. He is part man and part robot, giving him superhuman strength, agility and speed. The ability to stop Brixton throughout the film seems quite impossible and Hobbs and Shaw have the odds stacked against them more and more as the story progresses. While Brixton is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most ridiculous character to ever be present in a FF film, his ability to stand up against two of the most formidable men in the world made his character somewhat enjoyable. Aside from the characters intensity, and Elba’s wonderful acting ability, there was not much to appreciate about the antagonist. He lacked much development, showed next to no empathy and appeared to have one thing in mind, world domination for the sake of world domination (without much of a motive). The only backstory provided on the character was that he was just as much of an asshat in the past as he is currently, which did not change many opinions of the character or his ability to charm audiences. The action sequences are ridiculously corny, truly impossible and full of unnecessary commentary that simply furthered the impossibility of the film. The one aspect that lent itself to making sense in the world of Fast and Furious was family. Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) and Hobb’s brother Jonah (Cliff Curtis) play significant roles in the development of the story and Kirby is, in many ways, the reason for the story taking place. The two new characters work well with the fan favorite Hobbs and Shaw and together they make a family that is very much like Toretto (Vin Diesel) and O’Connor’s (Paul Walker); prepared to ride or die for one another. Director David Lietch (and producer, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) tried too hard to provide fans extensive action sequences and to have audiences continue laughing throughout the film. While these aspects of the film were clear, they were also clearly too much for audiences to handle. It would be unfair to expect that the sequel (which seems inevitable) will tone anything down or that fans should even ask the crew to do so. Johnson has thrived on this formula of ridiculousness since his days in wrestling and he has so much to show for it. So, do not think too much; simply allow things to play out and accept the film for what it is, an action packed adventure. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6806448/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
