Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

Looking to sit back, kick your feet up and think about nothing for ninety minutes? Then Amy Heckerling’s 1982 hit is for you. The film has limited direction and lacks a rising and falling action or a true climax. It appears that Heckerling’s only goal was to nonsensically entertain her audience. She managed to do just that with a barrage of crude humor, drugs, drinking and a truly bitchin’ soundtrack. While Sean Penn (Jeff Spicoli) was the top-billed member of the cast, it was Judge Reinhold (Brad Hamilton) that stole the show. He appeared to be, even though he had his moments of stupidity, the most down to earth and relatable character in the entire film. Reinhold’s ability to connect with audiences (particularly with those who grew up during the 1980’s) is what made the character so enjoyable. While Heckerling’s attempt to provide audiences with ridiculous humor and unrelenting references to sex was successful, her flaw was in her inability to provide viewers with any form of time stamp. In a matter of an hour and a half audiences see the story progress more than ten months (approximately September to June). It is often difficult to determine when things take place throughout the film, leaving viewers a bit confused about how things were happening at such a fast pace. With the exception of her timing, Heckerling managed to throw together a fun and simplistic film that, while targeting teens in the 80’s, is able to transcend many generations. It follows teenage love, peer pressure and just about every other aspect of teen life that has remained the same for years. This film is timeless and is sure to provide a laugh or two to mature audiences. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083929/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
