Insurgent (2015)

The second installment of the Divergent series starts out in a similar fashion to that of the first film with narration by Kate Winslet’s Jeanine. She, like Tris in the first film, smoothly brings the audience up to speed on what to expect throughout the course of the film. What was different about this introduction was the fact that everything Jeanine says is far easier to follow than the information provided by Tris. This film steps it up in terms of action, acting and pacing of the story. From the moment the film begins, the main characters (Tris, Four and Peter (Miles Teller)) are forced to make difficult decisions; forced to fight for what they believe in even if it means sacrificing everything in the process. There was far more on the line in this film than there was in the first, bringing a new level of excitement to the table. The danger and excitement of the predicaments that the leads are placed in force the audience to pay attention and begin to cheer for them. Along with the intensity of the film, the acting was also significantly better than the previous film. The viewers could see and feel the emotion in each character, making each of the characters more relatable than before. There were huge shifts within the ranks of the characters; Peter, while a pain in the ass throughout the course of the film, ultimately makes huge strides towards redemption by the end. He quickly became my favorite character in the series due to his humor, his intellectually imposing nature and his ability to manipulate most situations to play out in his favor. Ansel Elgort’s Caleb manages to do the exact opposite. He begins standing next to and supporting the sister who loves and cherishes him and ends turning his back on the people he claims to love. The introduction of new characters is what helped transition from this installment to the next. As things appeared to officially wrap up, it was Naomi Watts’ Evelyn that reopens the story and prepares the audience for what is going to happen next. Like at the end of the first film, I was excited for what was coming. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2908446/?ref_=tt_rec_tt
