Jungle Moon: Steven Universe's 'Alien' Episode (2021)

Slips (E) takes viewers on a journey through the massively successful animated show Steven Universe. With a specific focus on Jungle Moon: Steven Universe’s ‘Alien’ Episode, Sips aims to make clear the significance of the aforementioned episode, as well as its relevance in the real world. Jungle Moon: Steven Universe’s ‘Alien’ Episode is the premier of E’s Spectral Cuts webshow, and what a way to start.

Intelligence is attractive. I’m not talking about being physically attracted to someone, but rather when a person is or appears intelligent, they are much more easily able to attract others to them and to get people to listen to them with ease. E is just that throughout the course of Jungle Moon: Steven Universe’s ‘Alien’ Episode, intelligent. His clear understanding of the English language and his ability to manipulate his words into something quite entertaining is powerful, and it becomes incredibly easy to follow along and remain engaged throughout. However, E doesn’t just appear to be an intellectual; his deep, meaningful knowledge of Steven Universe, and every piece of the seemingly changing puzzle that is the show is invigorating. Knowledge is power, and that’s exactly what E possesses throughout Jungle Moon: Steven Universe’s ‘Alien’ Episode.

E is animated and welcoming. With essentially the entirety of the episode resting on E’s capable shoulders, he needs to be as close to perfect as humanly possible, and I believe that he finds success here. In addition to his grandeur knowledge of Steven Universe, he’s, in some ways, an everyman. I love this phrase: “everyman.” It means that the person in question represents the general population and that viewers are able to connect with him or her. While, again, his knowledge of his subject is imperative and attractive, the ability of E to reach his viewers on an emotional level is the key to his success.

Now, E is the one tasked with entertaining his viewers, but there are so many other moving parts present in Jungle Moon: Steven Universe’s ‘Alien’ Episode. Animation, cohesion, sound, dialogue (because it felt from time to time as if I were having a conversation with Slips), etc. are essential to the episode. I’m not sure there’s anything spectacular or out of this world in regard to production of the episode, but each and every aspect is, at the very least, effective. Transitions from scene to scene are smooth, sound is clear, and the linear nature of E’s storytelling keeps viewers informed and engaged without losing them along the way. Sure, the amount of information thrown at viewers in just over forty-three minutes can be overwhelming, but E’s calm demeanor and efficacious abilities in all other aspects of production allow viewers to remain calm and take in all of the pertinent information.

Full disclosure, I’ve never seen an episode of Steven Universe, and, honestly, my knowledge of the show extends no further than knowing that E is a massive fan. And, while Steven Universe isn’t a show that I’ll likely seek out in the future, the narrative presented in Jungle Moon: Steven Universe’s ‘Alien’ Episode speaks to me. It allows me to see that Steven Universe isn’t an empty vessel with the intention of raking in money, but rather a relevant and emotionally driven journey built to resonate with all. With this first installment of Spectral Cuts, it’s clear that the webshow will find success.
