Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996)

Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love tells the story of love and loss, and they journey toward both. It depicts the difficulties that we all face when dealing with both love and jealousy. Maya (Indira Varma) and Tara (Sarita Choudhury) have competed with one another throughout their entire lives. They have competed in dance, in status and in overall recognition. In the early adult years, Tara is married to the king-to-be, Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews). When Naveen begins to become attached to Maya, the competition will evolve into something entirely different. This new sexual competition will draw a wedge between the two girls like never before and will test their resolve.

In her first appearance ever, Indira Varma plays the main character in this tale of sex and love. Director Mira Nair sees something in Varma that compels her to cast her in the lead role. Nair is right in her decision to cast Varma, as she is quite compelling and she accurately depicts the anxious and sexually driven Maya. Her endearing facial expressions allow audiences to empathize with her through her difficulties and with the pain she endlessly suffers throughout the course of the film. Her first showing as an actor makes it clear why she has had such a successful career in television and film, most notably in the Home Box Office hit Game of Thrones

Varma’s stellar performance, however, is not enough to bring balance to a film where the majority of the actors are unable to carry their own weight. Choudhury, Ramon Tikaram (Jai Kumar) and Andrews fail to entertain and lack the ability to convince audiences of what is taking place. They appear complacent and dull throughout the film and they regularly dampen some of the more intense scenes in the film. They attempt to play their respective roles too simply, and, as information and emotion is conveyed from character to audience, much is lost in translation. Their lack of expression and lack of talent makes viewing Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love very trying and difficult.

The story possesses some components that lend themselves to creating a successful film. The ideas of competition and sex as a weapon make the idea of the film compelling and gripping. However, the lack of talent among the actors nearly destroys the appeal of the story and struggles to allow audiences to appreciate the unique and colorful story Mira Nair and writer Helena Kriel create. With a lack of conviction, the story loses meaning and the audience is left unhappy with the finished product.
