"Motorcycle Mary" (2024)

-Written by Kyle Bain.

Mary McGee was the first person ever to complete the Baja 500 by themselves. Mary was a trailblazer in the world of motorsports for women, and she now sits down to discuss her life and her career. ESPN’s 30 for 30 provides Mary the opportunity to tell the world who she is in one of their latest installments called “Motorcycle Mary.”

It’s clear the production value of “Motorcycle Mary,” as we are immersed in this world, often up close and personal with Mary. Additionally, “Motorcycle Mary” possesses a series of archived footage, footage that must have been incredibly difficult to obtain. To include so much from Mary’s past helped to bolster the film, and it allowed viewers to better appreciate the subject of the film and all that she has to offer throughout.

What “Motorcycle Mary” does so well is that it gets straight to the point. It doesn't linger on useless, boring information, and it allows Mary to tell her story in full, without being interrupted by anyone or anything. Pieced together and paced nicely, every bit of Mary’s story comes to life in a way that is accessible, understandable, sometimes even relatable.

Motorcycle Mary” is simple, and, honestly, there isn’t much to talk about in regard to reviewing it. It’s short, but it contains a ton of information about Mary’s life. It’s honest, not pulling any punches or attempting to paint Mary a specific way. It’s well made in the sense that it’s cohesive and linear. “Motorcycle Mary” is a damn good documentary. It doesn’t make you think, but it certainly makes you feel something.
