Palookaville (2023)

2023 BUSHWICK FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW!

Palookaville is a young man’s story as he tries to find his way in this dangerous world. Struggling with life, and just going through the motions, he begins to believe that he is famed boxer Joe Louis.

It’s incredibly interesting that Palookaville feels so surreal, because every second of the film attempts to lend itself to reality. As the film drives forward viewers are constantly reminded of the terrible things that occur on a daily basis in this harrowing world. Theft, murder, and more make their way into the film and they transcend the entirety of Palookaville, constantly reeling us in further and further. Again, Palookaville does a really good job of, while the lighting and such makes the film often feel larger than life, remain grounded and relevant. There’s no overacting, nothing unorthodox about the film at all really, and Writer-Director Theodore Collatos does a brilliant job of continuously allowing viewers access to his short film.

Palookaville is constantly moving forward, constantly navigating an ever-changing landscape. Things remain fresh throughout, and the film never really has a chance to take a breather–continuing to guide viewers, very swiftly, through the narrative. Remaining true to reality, Palookaville is a knockout.
