Reinventing Mirazur (2021)

2022 TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL REVIEW!

Mauro Colagreco is a world-renowned Argentenien chef living and working in France. He is the owner and primary chef at Mirazur, a restaurant that won best restaurant in the world in 2019. Life is good, and things have never been better for Mauro, his family, and his employees–but in March of 2020 the world stopped and COVID-19 altered the food industry forever. Mauro is now tasked with Reinventing Mirazur so that he can still provide for his family, and so that the world can appreciate the greatest restaurant in the world.

While Reinventing Mirazur expresses the difficulties of COVID-19 in the food industry, what it really does is show how Mauro attacked it as an opportunity to reinvent himself, his restaurant, and his food. There are certainly negative points made about the pandemic, and there really isn’t any way to fully avoid this aspect of the past twenty-seven months, but to see a group of individuals accept the changes as challenges to conquer, rather than hindrances that will drag them down is refreshing. That’s what Reinventing Mirazur is, refreshing–from beginning to end.

I love food–it’s not something that I often explore in my day-to-day, but I enjoy watching individuals construct unique dishes on the Food Network, and when my wife and I travel, the most important thing about that trip is the food. We plan everything around the food, and we’ve loved every second of our culinary experiences while on vacation. With that being said, Reinventing Mirazur is a foodies’ dream. It captures the raw culinary talent of everyone involved, and viewers get an up-close-and-personal look at the many delicious dishes constructed by Mauro and his team. Beyond that, outside of the kitchen, Mauro and his cohort take viewers on a journey through his gardens, and through the life cycle of his food and his restaurant. He explains, in detail, how things grow, and how that process affects food and his dishes–and the entire experience feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see inside of one of the best restaurants ever.

I’ve worked in a kitchen, and with all of the moving parts and numerous individuals filing in and out and moving around throughout the course of a shift it can get incredibly claustrophobic. The team of cameramen, gaffers, etc. that take part in bringing Reinventing Mirazur to life do a truly incredible job. They squeeze into some confined places to bring this story of Mauro and Mirazur to the big screen, and their willingness to be intimate with everyone else on set during a time of crisis is commendable, and a major part of the film’s success comes from their sacrifice.

I’ve seen some wonderful documentaries, but it’s fair to say that Reinventing Mirazur is one of the best. From the crew tasked with capturing the true nature of everything occurring, to the beautifully relevant and meaningful content, Reinventing Mirazur is a truly wonderful film capable of touching the hearts of anyone watching. I’m incredibly impressed with every single aspect of this film–and I can assure you that your mouth will be watering by the film’s conclusion.
