Scary Movie V (2013)

Dan (Simon Rex) and Jody (Ashley Tisdale) have just gained custody of Dan’s nieces and nephew. The husband and wife have no experience taking care of children, and this new task will prove to be difficult, but there are far more challenging things coming their way. The house that the new family has moved into is being haunted by an insidious demon, and the young couple must find a way to save their nieces and nephew before it’s too late. Scary Movie V is the fifth and final installment in the Scary Movie franchise, and certainly the most unique–can it save the franchise and right the wrongs of its predecessor?

The Scary Movie franchise, after the Scary Movie 4 debacle, has, without a shadow of a doubt, lost its way. After the first three installments expressed to viewers so much promise in terms of the series’ potential, the fourth film completely tanked, antagonizing viewers in the worst possible ways and aggravating me to no end. I failed to find much at all about the film to appreciate, and while I did not have high hopes for Scary Movie V, I was optimistic that it would still find a way to be better than its predecessor; boy was I wrong.

Scary Movie V sees the cast entirely revamped, and for the first time void of Anna Faris’ Cindy. I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of Faris, and I typically find her acting and the characters that she portrays less than entertaining, but the fact is that Faris was the face of the franchise and her absence causes Scary Movie V to feel incomplete. In addition to Faris, actors like Anthony Anderson, Regina Hall, and Kevin Hart did not return for what will hopefully be the final installment of the franchise. While Faris had to refuse the opportunity to return as a result of personal reasons, the others opted out for other reasons, and after watching Scary Movie V, I can’t imagine that it didn’t have something to do with the fact that the script is horrific. Scary Movie V is a dumpster fire from the start, and attempts to pull viewers into a world of absolute ridiculousness that appeals to no one.

There are so many negatives present throughout the course of Scary Movie V, and it seems impossible to find anything redeeming about the film whatsoever. Every second is filled with nonsense that caused me to feel like I was actually getting dumber, the audio and video are often out of sync, and the fractured nature of the story is incredibly disheartening.

The story is trash, the acting unintentionally ineffective, and the comedy barely exists, leading Scary Movie V to fail miserably. The franchise had already worn out its welcome in the world of cinema, but this solidifies the fact that the series is washed up and that it needs to come to an end. Even if you’ve loved the first three films in the Scary Movie franchise, I implore you to avoid Scary Movie V at all costs–it will waste your time and nearly bore you to death.
