Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Avengers: Endgame was the epic conclusion that brought an end to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the world knew it. The reality is, however, that the MCU must continue, and who better to propel the franchise forward than Spider-Man (Tom Holland)? Dealing with the events of Avengers: Endgame, however, proves to be incredibly difficult for the neighborhood hero, and his life becomes more trying than ever. In order to escape his somewhat dreadful reality and relax, Peter Parker travels to Italy on a school trip, where, in typical Avenger fashion, trouble follows. Spider-Man: Far From Home sees Peter, and his alter ego, Spider-Man, struggling with their reality, but unwilling to succumb to the treachery of the Elementals. With help from new ally Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), Peter will do all that he can to save the world once again.

Tom Holland quickly became a fan favorite when he was first introduced back in 2016. However, when he first graced the big screen he had only scratched the surface with what he would soon be capable of in the grand scheme of the MCU. It was clear in the first moments that Holland's Spider-Man would eventually play a significant role in said MCU and that his series would be one of the most important of the overall franchise. Spider-Man: Far From Home is where this character is afforded the ability to grow immensely right before the audience’s eyes. While Holland has done a wonderful job from the very beginning, he is tasked with conveying a slew of emotions from beginning to end, and he’s gleaming in every opportunity. Holland shines brightly throughout the course of this film, proving his worth both in the greater MCU and Hollywood.

Playing opposite Holland throughout the majority of the film is one of my personal favorite actors, Jake Gyllenhaal. He plays a significantly more mysterious character than Spider-Man, Quentin Beck, who is part of this film to help bring life, passion, and emotion to the titular Spider-Man. Beck is one of the more interesting characters ever to play a role in the MCU, and Spider-Man: Far From Home is better as a result of his presence. Gyllenhaal is an immensely talented individual who brings a level of joie de vivre to each and every one of his roles. What makes this particular role special is that he has the ability to explore nearly every emotion and bring out the best in one of the world’s favorite superheroes–Spider-Man. Both the comparisons and juxtapositions between Parker and Beck make for such beautiful storytelling and impeccable dialogue, bringing out not only the brilliance of both the actors and the characters, but the writing of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers and the direction of Jon Watts as well.

The story of Spider-Man: Far From Home is odd to say the least. There are a series of twists and turns that occur throughout the film that cause viewers to question the integrity of the film as a whole; however, the depth presented as a result of these twists and turns only makes the film better. Sure, some of what transpires feels a bit strange, but we’re talking about a teenage boy with spider-like abilities, so, nothing should feel too far-fetched. I think that the twisted nature of Spider-Man: Far From Home accurately represents all that the MCU has to offer, and it brings to life something massive, entertaining, and ground-breaking in the world of superheroes.

There are moments of intensity sprinkled throughout Spider-Man: Far From Home that lend themselves nicely to drawing in viewers and tapping into their emotions. As the film begins to come to a close, however, there is a moment of incredible suspense and excitement that has the potential to draw viewers in even further than before. Without giving anything away, I believe that it’s fair to say that the scene in question is one of the best of the MCU.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is fun, energetic, humorous, and intense, creating a truly wonderful juxtaposition of emotions. From beginning to end Spider-Man, Mysterio, and the rest of the ensemble bring to life a film that was tasked with following up one of the biggest cinematic spectacles of all time, Avengers: Endgame. While it was obvious going in that Spider-Man: Far From Home couldn’t compare literally, emotionally, or cinematically to the previous MCU film, it’s clear that this is the perfect follow-up film and the best possible conclusion to Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There are some minor bumps in the road attached to the winding road present throughout Spider-Man: Far From Home, but the reality is that the brilliance of Holland and Gyllenhaal, bring to life a phenomenal story of overcoming physical and emotional obstacles and fighting for whatever it is that you love; ideas that resonate with all viewers. Spider-Man: Far From Home is better than the first installment of the Spider-Man franchise and a brilliantly integral part to the greater MCU.
