The Back-up Plan (2010)

This film ran almost exactly the same course as ninety-nine percent of all other “chick flicks.” This is exactly what I struggle to appreciate about this genre of film, the fact that they always follow the same general storyline and while the means change, the outcome is typically the same. There was, however, something that was very different about this film compared to many others: while the story remained the same, it appeared that the story more so followed Alex O’Loughlin’s Stan rather than the female lead. I actually enjoyed the two main characters in this film; Jennifer Lopez’s Zoe and Stan were much different than most characters in films of this sort. I found Stan to be very enjoyable; he was funny and witty and added a very new dimension to this type of film (I also believe that he looks like a slightly Hispanic version of Luke Bryan--even though he’s not Hispanic). As much fun as the two main characters were, I thought that Anthony Anderson’s “Playground Dad” was the best character. He, as he usually is, was incredibly funny and his strange tone of voice makes him that much funnier. As far as characters go, I found Melissa McCarthy’s Carol to be terribly boring. I typically cannot stand her acting or her comedy, and this film was no exception. She can literally come in at the funniest moment of the film and put a huge damper on it; she completely ruins just about every aspect of every scene she’s in. There was one scene in which Zoe comes back from shopping for miscellaneous baby items from Toys-R-Us that I found funny just due to the fact that Toys-R-Us is no longer a store.I don’t know if I had realized this prior to this film, but I have now come to the realization that I find it incredibly corny when musicians-turned-actor have their songs in a film in which they star. While I found much of what took place towards the end of the film to be terribly frustrating, literally to the point that I was mad at the characters in the film, as a whole, I thought this film, despite the cliché chain of events, was a bit more enjoyable than most “chick flicks.” https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1212436/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
