Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Let’s be honest, Thor and Thor: The Dark World were underwhelming in the grand scheme of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It was difficult to make connections with the stories in the first two installments of the Thor franchise, and they ultimately failed to entertain in the same fashion as the majority of the MCU films to date. While the term “savior” may seem a bit dramatic, it’s fair to say that director Taika Waititi did, in fact, save this franchise. Thor: Ragnarok turns a new leaf on the franchise and the character of Thor (Chris Hemsworth), paving the way for that character to burrow himself in the hearts of viewers around the world.

After the events of Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron Thor finds himself preparing to stop the destruction of Asgard known as Ragnarok. However, Thor: Ragnarok sees Thor facing threats far worse than Ragnarok, including his sister, the goddess of death, Hela (Cate Blanchett). Teaming up with his sinister brother, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and newcomers Korg (Waititi) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) to fight the universe's greatest threat to date, can Thor’s new team defeat evil and bring balance to the universe, or will the evil Hela reign supreme?

Thor has been very Shakespearean and dramatic since he was first introduced in 2011, but Waititi and his slew of writers, including Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Christopher L. Yost, shift Thor’s role immensely, allowing viewers to better appreciate him and all that he represents in the MCU. Family has been a theme throughout the course of the MCU, but Thor has always been at the center of that theme. Attached to his films are his brother, sister, mother, and father. Each of these family members play an integral role in the MCU; but the idea of family comes into play as big as ever in Thor: Ragnarok making both the franchise and character better than ever before. As Thor’s emotions come into play viewers are able to make connections between themselves and the characters on screen. There are moments of intense sadness and beautiful comedic relief that draw in viewers and refuse to let them go. Every second becomes more and more powerful, and by the end of the film viewers have experienced one of the most intense, and equally funny, films of the past twenty years.

The juxtaposition of drama and comedy that lives within Thor: Ragnarok engages viewers and keeps them entertained from beginning to end. The changes made to Thor remain through the future installments of the MCU, and while that is integral to what comes after, this installment in the Thor franchise plays an immensely important role in setting up the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Nearly everything that transpires throughout the course of this film is relevant when the highly-anticipated third installment of the Avengers franchise was released the following year. With that being said, it’s safe to say that, up to this point in the MCU, no other director, and no other group of writers has been tasked with something quite so vast. Not only was this cast and crew expected to right the ship of Thor’s story, but they were tasked with setting up the biggest event in cinematic history, and they did so wonderfully.

Thor: Ragnarok was recently voted the most rewatchable MCU film, a title very fitting of the action-packed, comedy-filled superhero film. While the film only takes place over the course of a couple of days, there is so much packed into it that viewers find something new each and every time. A joke, an inspirational quote, or an emotional tug at the heartstrings can be found after each and every viewing. There is very literally something for everyone to enjoy in Thor: Ragnarok, and that comes primarily as a result of Waititi’s brilliance as a director (and an actor). There is nothing about this film that disappoints as nearly every aspect of Thor: Ragnarok exceeds expectations. The Thor franchise has been fully revitalized and the MCU has been given new, outstanding content to help drive it forward in the future. Thor: Ragnarok is one of the best MCU films to date and far better than most had expected.
