Where My Road Ends Yours Begins (2023)

-Written by Michelle Vorob

2024 FILM MAUDIT 2.0 REVIEW!

Where My Road Ends Yours Begins is a short film of just three minutes by Jenny Stark. Filmed in black and white, there is an undercurrent of something dark among the idyllic, some kind of domestic abuse carried from each generation to the next.

Through a series of disjointed images and scenes of somber women, a home, and a neighborhood, you quickly pick up on something amiss. Adding to the effect is a hard-to-decipher mix of police scanner chatter, combined with an old-sounding song.

Something done well can convey so much, be thought-provoking and Where My Road Ends Yours Begins achieves this. Violence against women is a universal, far-reaching violation of human rights. It crosses time and has no easy solution, because it encompasses all aspects of society. Whether the intent of Stark is to convey one family's abuse, one woman's abuse over time, or the multiple victims of offenders, it is all still violence against women.

Where My Road Ends Yours Begins can start a dialogue. It would actually make a great visual for a PSA about violence against women. If you have the opportunity to watch this very brief film with a message, I encourage you to do so.

Directed by Jenny Stark.
